Cádiz

A Street of Orange Trees, 2020
acrylic on canvas, 130 × 100 cm

“Numerous squares and little squares hidden among narrow, twisting streets are part of the architecture of Cádiz. In one of these little squares, we catch our breath and then with the help of our telephone apps we make our way through the labyrinth, which at every corner amazes us with something new. It is early morning and at this hour the streets are empty; mainly delivery people are to be seen. The city is still a little sleepy.

A sky the colour of ultramarine sets off the white of the houses. This morning the orange trees surprise me; they grow along the pavements like decorative trees. Fruits of an intense orange gleam in the sun and tempt you to reach out to touch them. The closer we get to the campus, the more we encounter these trees, covered in ripe juicy fruit. Sometime I’ll come back in spring to smell the orange blossom.”
