Kiel

Kiel Canal, 2022
acrylic on canvas, 130×100 cm

“Kiel is a city of students and sailors. Since the place has always attracted seafaring people, sails have become an integral part of the landscape. Kiel is home to the Kiel Sailing Museum, and the Kieler Woche, a worldwide sailing festival, is held every summer. Kiel lies on the busiest artificial waterway, the Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. Both large passenger ferries and container ships are stationed in the port. Christian-Albrecht University has been thriving in Kiel since 1655 and the world owes the city such inventions as the gyroscope, contact lenses and the fax machine.

Apparently an absolute delicacy is the local ham smoked cold with beech smoke for 8 weeks (Holsteiner Katenschinken), served with white asparagus, butter potatoes and Hollandaise sauce.
It’s well worth checking out.

That journey is still ahead of me…”
