Pier in Gdynia Orlowo, 2022
acrylic on canvas, 130×100 cm
Every coastal city larger or smaller has a wharf, fishing harbor, sailing harbor or pier.
Each of the cities where various departments of the University of Gdansk are located has its own pier.
What do they have in common that makes them different? Gdynia has the one in Orlowo with its turbulent history on a beautiful fishing beach with a famous view of the Orlowo Cliff and Gdansk has the one in Brzeźno, the youngest as the previous one was destroyed during the war. Both picturesque, both encourage walking.
But when I think of a pier, with my eyes I see only the Sopot one, which, like the city of Sopot, is colorful and laughing. The Sopot pier is the longest wooden pier in Europe at over 511.5 meters long with unique views of the Grand Hotel and the Curacao House. And to tell the truth whether the sun is shining or it’s snowing there is always someone here. It’s also such a must see for students of the Faculty of Economics and Faculty of Management.
